Every family mystery starts with a question.
You may have taken a DNA test and not know what your matches mean. You may be trying to identify an unknown biological parent or ancestor, test a family story, or understand a connection to a particular family.
The Missing Branch combines autosomal DNA match analysis with family-history research to investigate these questions and follow the evidence wherever it leads.
Not sure which service you need? That's fine. Tell me about your question and the DNA results you have available, and I can assess whether your case may be suitable for research.
Understand what your DNA matches may be telling you.
For people who have taken an autosomal DNA test but aren't sure where to start. I will review your available DNA matches, shared matches and family-tree information to identify useful matches, possible family groups and potential directions for further research.
This may be suitable if you:
You receive: A written summary of my findings and suggested next steps.

Using DNA and family-history research to investigate a specific biological relationship.
For more detailed questions involving unknown or uncertain biological relationships. I use DNA matches alongside shared-match analysis, research trees and documentary records to investigate the evidence and test possible relationships.
This could include questions such as:
Who was my biological father or grandfather?
Could a family story about parentage be true?
Am I biologically connected to a particular family?
Why do my DNA family appear different from my documented tree?
Every case is different, and the available DNA evidence needs to be assessed before I can determine whether research is likely to be worthwhile.
You receive: A written research report explaining the evidence considered, research undertaken, findings, conclusions and any questions that remain unresolved.
Price: Quoted following assessment of the case.
Discover more about the people and families behind your tree.
Documentary family-history research can be undertaken either alongside DNA research or as a separate piece of research.
This might involve tracing an ancestral line, researching a particular person or family, investigating conflicting information, or exploring the lives and circumstances of ancestors identified through DNA research.
You receive: A written summary of the research and findings, with details of the sources used.
Price: Quoted according to the scope of the research.
Has a new match appeared since your original research?
DNA databases continue to grow as more people test. A significant new match can sometimes strengthen an existing conclusion, provide a new research direction or help answer a question that couldn't previously be resolved.
This service is for previous clients who would like me to revisit their case following new DNA matches.
You receive: An update explaining the new evidence and whether it adds to or changes the previous findings.
Price: To be confirmed.
Tell me about the question you're trying to answer, where you've tested and the DNA matches you have available. I'll use that information to assess whether I may be able to help and what type of research would be appropriate.
Not every DNA mystery can be solved with the evidence currently available, and I don't guarantee a particular outcome.
